Every software has its own format. So with the GEDCOM you can import your data into an other software.<\/p>\n<p>When you start with Heredis, you might want to import your GEDCOM file to get your work in Heredis.<br \/>\nYou can easily do that. From your old software or the genealogy website you were using, export your GEDCOM, you usually have to choose some options. Make sure to take all data and you have to choose UTF-8 encoding. To simplify, it is a universal language for computers. Save the GEDCOM on you local disk.<\/p>\n<p>Then open Heredis, from the home page :<br \/>\nClick on <strong>Open a GEDCOM<\/strong>.<br \/>\nTell Heredis where to find your GEDCOM. You can rename it. Choose how to process the given names.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8450\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/import_pc.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"549\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/import_pc.png 549w, https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/import_pc-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 549px) 100vw, 549px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While converting, Heredis will ask you to check on locations. If you see a switch, for example between towns and Place subdivision, just click \u201cSelect Appropriate Place Elements\u201d then click on the list before the table and change it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8453\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/import_location_pc.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"549\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/import_location_pc.png 549w, https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/import_location_pc-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 549px) 100vw, 549px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You also might get to choose what to do with some unknown data. Every software has its own ways of handling data. So you might encounter this following screen :<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8456\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/unknown_tag.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"549\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/unknown_tag.png 549w, https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/unknown_tag-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 549px) 100vw, 549px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Choose if you want to keep the data as Events or User Field. If you do not understand the tag, just look on the internet for <a href=\"http:\/\/wiki-en.genealogy.net\/GEDCOM-Tags\">Gedcom tag<\/a> or on the guide of the software that created the GEDCOM.<\/p>\n<p>Then Heredis will ask you if you want to add a special source for all the elements you are importing.<\/p>\n<p>Click on <strong>Done<\/strong> to proceed.<\/p>\n<p>Note that a GEDCOM <strong><em>do not contain media<\/em><\/strong>. It only keeps the path to the original media. So when you create a GEDCOM, make sure you create a folder with your media.<\/p>\n<p>If your GEDCOM contains media data, you will have to tell Heredis where to find the media, so click on Yes.<br \/>\nAs previously said, a GEDCOM file only keeps the path to the original media.
