Consider before this type of operation to save a copy of your original file if necessary or back up the modified file under another name.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\" data-darkreader-inline-color=\"\">Importing a GEDCOM requires taking its time, don&#8217;t validate too fast, you won&#8217;t be able to make any changes after the import.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>(Windows) Importing a GEDCOM<\/h3>\n<p>From the file in which you want to import the GEDCOM file.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Launch Heredis.<\/li>\n<li>Open your genealogy file.<\/li>\n<li>Choose <strong>File &gt; Import &gt; GEDCOM file.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A message will warn you that the process is irreversible; if you have not created a backup, we advise you to click on No and to create one beforehand.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Select the file (it must carry a <em>.ged<\/em> extension to be recognized by Heredis), then click <strong>Open.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Select it and click <strong>Open<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Choose whether or not to import media and sources, and how to handle quote names.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18631\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/gedcom_import_en_pc.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"549\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/gedcom_import_en_pc.png 549w, https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/gedcom_import_en_pc-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 549px) 100vw, 549px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click <strong>Next<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>You will probably have to check the places, not all software manages them in the same way. If you see a window like the one below, check the locations. Click <strong>Select appropriate places elements<\/strong> if the order does not match the data correctly. So there are Owner Tags that may be unknown to Heredis (see article <a href=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/en\/what-is-a-gedcom-file\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">What is a GEDCOM?<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/en\/gedcom-tags\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GEDCOM tags generated by Heredis<\/a> for more details).<\/p>\n<p>If Heredis does not understand a tag, then a window will open and ask you to handle this information yourself.<\/p>\n<p>It will not be easy to modify it once the file is opened! Hence the importance to take the time to go through this process carefully.<\/p>\n<p>You can choose whether or not to import unknown elements (tags). Heredis informs you of the type of data, e.g. whether it is a Source or Media item, etc.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-53354\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/import_ged_tag25_pc-en.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"549\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/import_ged_tag25_pc-en.jpg 549w, https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/import_ged_tag25_pc-en-300x190.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 549px) 100vw, 549px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you know the type of data indicated, click in the white box and modify the tag by indicating the title.<\/p>\n<p>For example, you know that the REFT tag used by the software that created the GEDCOM corresponds to the document type. Click in the white box, delete REFT and indicate Type.<br \/>\nClick on the drop-down list and choose the location where you wish to see this element: <strong>Document<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t know the data type, choose <strong>Do not import<\/strong> to avoid polluting your file with unknown elements.<\/p>\n<p>Consult the user&#8217;s manual of the software that created the GEDCOM file to figure out what the \u201cunidentified\u201d tags refer to.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Once the tags are taken care of, click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Check the <strong>Assign a new source to<\/strong> box and choose which data to add that source to you. Fill the fields out of the source if you want to assign one.
