The number of items matching your search is displayed right underneath the search section.<\/p>\n<p>(<strong>Mac<\/strong>) Click the <strong>Magnifying Glass<\/strong> icon to select the search mode: \u201cSearch Starts With\u201d or \u201cSearch Contains\u201d the letters typed in.<\/p>\n<p>In order to delete or replace the searched word, click on the (<b>Windows<\/b>) <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1465 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/16-gomme.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\" \/> or (<strong>Mac<\/strong>) <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1466 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Gomme_16.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\" \/>, which appears in the input area.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The search can be limited to a single type of media by selecting it from the drop-down menu:<strong> All media,<\/strong> <strong>Image files, Audio files, Video files, Other types, Missing Media, Private<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Filter your search according to the type of data the media is assigned to by selecting in the other drop-down menu: <strong>All\/Whole index<\/strong>, <strong>Persons, Families, Sources, Events, Surnames, Given Names, Places, Unused Media, <\/strong>etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To better identify the selected media:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Choose to display a list or icons according to the name of the media or to the date you have entered.<\/li>\n<li>Sort the media by name or date. You can also enlarge the icons using the zoom cursor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Info<\/strong> \u2022 If you choose to display a list instead of icons, the results displayed as a list can be sorted according to the presence of a Note (N), of a Private media (P), or according to their name, by simply clicking on the column header.<\/p>\n<p>If a media is selected on the list, you can consult the data it is related to by clicking the <strong>Usage<\/strong> tab. Double-click the data you are interested in and it will be displayed in a new window.<\/p>\n<p>Starting with Heredis 2025, it has been possible to add flags to media. See the <a href=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/en\/media-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a> article for more details.<\/p>\n<p>You can filter with or without flags (to get all media), with or without flags, or choose from your list of flags.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you&#8217;re looking for all signatures and you&#8217;ve added a Signature flag to your media, choose to filter by.<\/p>\n<p><em>Mac Flags filter<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-53343\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/dic_media24_signature_mac-en.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"538\" srcset=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/dic_media24_signature_mac-en.png 1874w, https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/dic_media24_signature_mac-en-300x202.png 300w, https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/dic_media24_signature_mac-en-1024x688.png 1024w, https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/dic_media24_signature_mac-en-768x516.png 768w, https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/dic_media24_signature_mac-en-1536x1033.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Windows Flags filter<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-53346\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/dic_media24_signature_pc-en.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"710\" height=\"611\" srcset=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/dic_media24_signature_pc-en.jpg 710w, https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/dic_media24_signature_pc-en-300x258.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 710px) 100vw, 710px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3>The button bar<\/h3>\n<p>Below the media list or thumbnails, you&#8217;ll find a button bar.<\/p>\n<h3><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-51530\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/dico_media_barre_boutons.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"207\" height=\"29\" \/><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8829\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/16-plus.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\" \/> adds a media.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11953\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/16-moins-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\" \/> deletes the selected media.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11950\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Edit-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\" \/>\u00a0lets you edit the selected media. You can date it, add a note, do some simple retouching or even identify individuals in the photo. See the <a href=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/en\/photo-tool-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Photo Tool<\/a> article for full details.<\/p>\n<p>The <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8826\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/16-remplacer.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\" \/> <strong>Replace with<\/strong> button lets you replace one media item with another from the media dictionary. If, for example, you have duplicates, this function replaces the uses of the duplicate with the other media.<br \/>\nThe <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-51533\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/16-majMedia.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\" \/> <strong>Replace with computer media<\/strong> button lets you tell Heredis that media A is to be replaced by media B. This is very useful if you have renamed your media outside Heredis.<br \/>\nThe <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-51537\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/16-intervertir.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\" \/> <strong>Update from original<\/strong> button is useful for updating the selected media if, for example, you have made changes in a photo editing program.<br \/>\nThe <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16908\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/photo_enregistrer.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/> <strong>Save as<\/strong> button lets you save a copy of the media on your computer. It will be of the same quality as the one in the dictionary.<br \/>\nFinally, the <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-51541\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/renommer_media_bouton_pc.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"19\" height=\"17\" \/><strong>Rename media<\/strong> button lets you change the name. Full details in the <a href=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/en\/rename-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rename media<\/a> article.<\/p>\n<h3>Tools (Windows) or Options (Mac)<\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>Tools<\/strong> button on Windows and <strong>Options<\/strong> on Mac lets you perform a number of actions. Just click on them.<\/p>\n<h4>Export media<\/h4>\n<p>Click on <strong>Export<\/strong> <strong>selected media<\/strong> to create a Media folder in the name of your family tree, containing all the media in the dictionary.<\/p>\n<h4>Delete unused media<\/h4>\n<p>Click on (Windows) <strong>Tools<\/strong> \/ (Mac) <strong>Options<\/strong>.<br \/>\nChoose<strong> Remove unused media<\/strong>. All unused media will be deleted at once.<br \/>\nA message alerts you to the number to be deleted. This deletes the media from the genealogy and therefore from the dictionary, but does not delete the original stored on your computer.<\/p>\n<h4>Check media<\/h4>\n<p>Sometimes, your media in Heredis may be pixelated or even missing (icon with a cross <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9435\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Missing_media_EN.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"26\" height=\"26\" \/>). There are several reasons for this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Heredis no longer accesses the original because it has been moved or renamed or stored in a Cloud.<\/li>\n<li>Heredis can no longer access the copy of the Heredis file in the media folder.<\/li>\n<li>You have imported a GEDCOM file and a GEDCOM 5.5.1 never contains the media. For more information on GEDCOMs, see the article <a href=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/en\/what-is-a-gedcom-file\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">What is a GEDCOM?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Media verification allows you to reintegrate media in just a few clicks.<br \/>\nFor more details on how media works, see the article <a href=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/en\/media-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Open the <strong>Media Index <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26301\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/dicoMedias.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"32\" height=\"32\" \/><\/strong>.<br \/>\n1. Click on the (Windows) <strong>Tools<\/strong> \/ (Mac) <strong>Options<\/strong> (cogwheel) button in the index toolbar.<br \/>\n2. Select <strong>Check media&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Windows Check Media<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2585 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/media_check_pc_EN.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"238\" height=\"72\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Mac Check Media<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2586 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/media_check_mac1_EN.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"119\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Heredis reviews all the media in your genealogy and detects, if any:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>media not found following deletion from the Media folder managed by Heredis<\/li>\n<li>media of which the original has been modified by third party soft\u00adware other than Heredis<\/li>\n<li>and finally, media for which the original has changed location and is no longer present on your computer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the <strong>Media check<\/strong> window, you can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>in the <strong>Missing Media<\/strong> tab, designate a folder to search and update these media. Click on <strong>Choose folder and update<\/strong>. Indicate the location of the media on your computer. Heredis automatically reintegrates them if their name has not changed and if they are not media cut with the <a href=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/en\/photo-tool-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Photo Tool<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>in the <strong>Original changed<\/strong> tab, select all or part of the media managed by Heredis to update them from the originals. Click on <strong>Update the selection<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>in the <strong>Missing Original Media<\/strong> tab, specify the folder where your original is located. Click on<strong> Choose a folder<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: If your media are stored in multiple folders, you will have to do as many times the manipulation to indicate which folder you have folders.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Windows) Media check window<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2587 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/media_check_missing_pc_EN.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"696\" height=\"476\" \/><\/p>\n<p>(Mac) <em>Media check window<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2588 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/media_check_mac_EN.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"783\" height=\"510\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If your originals have changed their names, Heredis will not be able to reinstate them automatically. Indeed, the software cannot know that the name of a media have been changed. In this case, see the paragraph below.<\/p>\n<h3>Replacing or deleting media<\/h3>\n<h4>Replace media with other media<\/h4>\n<p>You may have assigned two different media but they were the same (an image of a source saved with two different names, the same image on the selected hard drive and in iPhoto &#8230;). You may only keep one assigned media but use it several times.<\/p>\n<p>1. Open the <strong>Media Index <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1877\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/dicoMedias.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"25\" height=\"25\" \/><\/strong>\u00a0and select the media to be replaced.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Media Index for Windows<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1081 size-full alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/media_index_pc_EN.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"736\" height=\"579\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Media Index for Mac<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1094 size-full alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/media_index_mac_EN.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"940\" height=\"682\" \/><\/p>\n<p>2. Click\u00a0<strong>Replace with another Media from&#8230; <\/strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1077\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/16-remplacer.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\" \/>\u00a0or <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1082\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/16-majMedia.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\" \/>on the but\u00adton bar of the display field and choose the duplicate image in the index or the replacement image in its folder on your hard drive.<\/p>\n<p>3. Select the media to be kept and click the <strong>Choose<\/strong> button.<br \/>\nThe initial media has been replaced by the second for all its uses.<\/p>\n<h4>Delete media<\/h4>\n<p>Display the <strong>Media<\/strong> panel, or open the <strong>Media Index.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Select the media to remove<\/li>\n<li>Click the<b>\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1141\" src=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/16-moins.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\" \/><\/b>\u00a0(Remove the selected media) button on the toolbar for media management.<\/li>\n<li><strong>(<\/strong><strong>Mac)<\/strong> Right-click the media and choose <strong>Remove&#8230;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Confirm the deletion of the media with <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This will delete the media from your genealogy file. If it had been used, it will no longer appear in the illustrations of data or persons to whom it was assigned.<\/p>\n<h3>Change Private field to<\/h3>\n<p>If any of the media in your index are marked <strong>Private<\/strong>, or if you wish to make them private, click on (Windows) <strong>Tools<\/strong> \/ (Mac) <strong>Options<\/strong> <strong>&gt; Change Private field to &gt;<\/strong> choose between <strong>Private<\/strong> and <strong>Not Private<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You can do this on a media-by-media basis. If you wish to modify in bulk, select the media to be modified before clicking on the (Windows) <strong>Tools<\/strong> \/ (Mac) <strong>Options &gt; Change Private field to &gt;<\/strong> choose between <strong>Private<\/strong> and <strong>Not Private<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<h3>(Mac) import new media from a folder<\/h3>\n<p>Click on the <strong>Options <\/strong>button &gt; <strong>Import new media from a folder<\/strong>.<br \/>\nSelect the location of the folder to be imported.<br \/>\nConfirm.<br \/>\nThe media in the selected folder will be added to the dictionary, ready for use in your genealogy.<\/p>\n<h3>Select multiple media<\/h3>\n<p>You can select multiple media from the media dictionary.<\/p>\n<p>On Windows, press the CTRL key on your keyboard and click on each media item to be selected.<br \/>\nTo select a whole list of successive media, press the SHIFT key on your keyboard and click on the start and end media of the list to be selected.<\/p>\n<p>On Macs, press the Cmd key on your keyboard and click on each media item to be selected.<br \/>\nTo select a whole list of successive media, press the SHIFT key on your keyboard and click on the start and end media of the list to be selected.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Read also the article Indexes: generalities for tools available on all indexes.<\/p>\n<p>Open the Media Index from the Tools menu [&#8230;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[45],"tags":[109],"class_list":["post-12481","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-use-heredis","tag-indexes"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Media Index - Heredis Help Knowledgebase<\/title>\n<meta name=\"robots\" content=\"index, follow, max-snippet:-1, max-image-preview:large, max-video-preview:-1\" \/>\n<link rel=\"canonical\" href=\"https:\/\/help.heredis.com\/en\/media-index\/\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:locale\" content=\"en_US\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:type\" content=\"article\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:title\" content=\"Media Index - Heredis Help Knowledgebase\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:description\" content=\"Read also the article Indexes: generalities for tools available on all indexes.
